I just found this information in Prevention Magazine and thought it was interesting. Most of us have “brown spots” and they really are the hardest skin care concern to treat. Studies have shown that these spots are most common in women who are pregnant, taking oral contraceptives or undergoing hormone replacement therapy. Genetic predisposition can also play a role in the appearance of brown spots.
A surprising cause of hyperpigmentation (aka brown spots) has surfaced:
Women exposed to higher concentrations of traffic-related particles had 20% more age spots. A study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology suggests these particles may ramp up melanin production. If you live near traffic- or spend a lot of time in it-, are experiencing any type of hormonal fluctuation, or have a family history of hyperpigmentation/melasma use lotion with ingredients such as licorice root extract, kojic acid and niacinamide. Try PCA Skin Perfection Protection SPF 30 – available at Spa 10’s Encino and Palm Desert locations.
